Kenya Safari Packing List: What to Wear and Bring

What to pack for a Kenya safari: neutral clothes, layers for cold mornings, a soft bag under 15 kg for flights, binoculars, sunscreen and more. Full checklist.

Short answer

For a Kenya safari, pack neutral-coloured light layers (khaki, olive, beige), a warm fleece for cold early mornings, a wide-brim hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens. Use a soft duffel bag. Fly-in safaris usually limit luggage to about 15 kg including hand luggage.

Clothes

  • 3–4 neutral T-shirts or shirts. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies.
  • 2 pairs of light trousers or zip-off pants, plus shorts for camp
  • A warm fleece or jacket, because Mara and Nairobi mornings can be around 10–12°C
  • A light rain jacket (November and March–May)
  • A wide-brim hat, sunglasses and comfortable closed shoes
  • Swimwear if your lodge has a pool or you add the beach

Gear

  • Binoculars, one pair per person if possible
  • A camera with a 100–400 mm zoom, spare batteries and memory cards
  • A power bank and a UK-type (Type G) adapter, which is what Kenya uses
  • A head torch for camps
  • A reusable water bottle

Health and documents

  • Passport valid for 6 months, plus your Kenya entry authorisation (check the current rules before you fly)
  • A yellow fever certificate if you are arriving from a risk country
  • Malaria prevention as advised by your doctor, plus insect repellent with DEET
  • Sunscreen SPF 50 and a basic first-aid kit
  • Travel insurance that covers safari and medical evacuation

What bag should I bring?

A soft duffel bag. Light aircraft to the Mara usually cap luggage at about 15 kg and will not take hard suitcases. On road safaris any bag works, but soft bags fit safari vehicles better.

Frequently asked questions

What colours should I not wear on safari?

Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies, and bright white, which shows dust. Khaki, olive, beige and brown are best.

Is it cold on a Kenya safari?

Early mornings and evenings in the Masai Mara, Nairobi and the highlands can be cold, around 10–12°C, so bring a fleece. Afternoons are usually warm, at 25–30°C.
